BACKGROUND
The Fauna Flora International, founded in
1903, works to save wildlife in over 40 countries over 5 continents. Its
Indonesia program (FFI-IP), established in 2010, is well known as a leading
institution in Indonesia wildlife conservation. The goal of FFI-IP is to
conserve Indonesia’s wildlife population and their habitat. Since it was
initiated, the FFI-IP has been making significant contributions to wildlife
contributions in Indonesia by providing advisory assistance on Indonesia
conservation issues. Its leading roles in science-based wildlife conservation
has been successfully achieved by implementing an integrated science-based
conservation approach including pre-project scientific design, systematic data
collection, data management, scientific-based data analysis, communicating
conservation science through scientific reports and publications, and post
project evaluation. For years, the FFI-IP has been able to translate its scientific
findings into effective conservation action through partnerships based on
mutual trust and respect with government agencies, universities, local NGOs,
and local communities. FFI is currently having the widest conservation presence
in Northern and Central Sumatra, mostly in protected areas and adjoining
habitats. However, recent studies found that many non-protected areas in
Sumatra still contain a high level of wildlife species richness. FFI recognizes
the important of non-protected habitats for key wildlife species and is now
working with relevant partners to strengthen its conservation measure in
biodiversity-rich non-protected areas in Central Sumatra. Due to the fast
growing needs of and to strengthen its science-based conservation action, FFI-IP
is seeking for qualified candidate to fill the position of a National
Biodiversity Monitoring Coordinator.
WORKING SCOPE
As part the FFI’s senior staff team, the National Biodiversity Monitoring
Coordinator is actively involved in the development and implementation of the
FFI-IP strategies and conservation targets as to achieve the overall FFI
International vision and missions. The main duty of the FFI-IP National
Biodiversity Monitoring Coordinator is to ensure that the goal and objectives
of the current and prospective biodiversity related projects as specified under
the project proposals and documentations are achieved in high standard and in timely
manner. The working scope includes:
Coordination: assists in the establishment and implementation of biodiversity related
projects and supporting activities both within the current projects and other
relevant FFI’s projects, and make sure that all relevant partners and
stakeholders are engaged and, therefore, supportive to project implementation.
Management: assists in project planning and fund raising, and managing the overall
operational of biodiversity related activities as specified in the current project
documentations focusing on but not limited to the operational of national
biodiversity team members activities both within the project and other relevant
FFI’s projects.
Monitoring: assists in the monitoring and evaluation of both individual and overall
biodiversity related project performance by developing and implementing practical
key performance indicators (KPI) for the projects and verifies the KPI through regular
participation in field activities in timely manner.
Internal administration: provides cash spending and travel reports, including documentations, as
specified in the FFI finance and administration guidelines.
General responsibilities:
1.
Coordinates
and monitors the preparation and implementation of biodiversity assessments in
the scope of biodiversity survey and monitoring for the FFI’s project sites
across Indonesia.
2.
Coordinates
and mobilizes the biodiversity teams to conduct the biodiversity assessment
field works for the FFI’s project sites across Indonesia, and to assure that
the field works are implemented in a high standard following the survey
protocols in timely manner.
3.
Supports and
facilitates the establishment of the biodiversity team for the FFI’s project
sites across Indonesia in terms of technical advice, recruiting and hiring relevant
staffs, experts and consultants as needed according to the specific project
objectives and activities.
4.
Coordinates
the collation of biodiversity database and project documentations of FFI’s
project sites across Indonesia to ensure that the database and project
documentations are updated following the survey protocols in timely manner.
5.
Coordinates
and facilitates the biodiversity team in writing reports based on the specific
project goal and objectives following a particular report standard; including
the development of biodiversity working documents for the FFI’s project sites
across Indonesia.
6.
Actively
promotes the biodiversity findings through presentation and participation on
scientific meeting and discussion and involves in communicating science-based
conservation through popular articles, scientific reports, and publications
both in Indonesian or English.
7.
Liaises and
coordinates with project partners to ensure that all technical agreements and
project activities are understood and carried out on time as per the project
proposal and timeline.
8.
Coordinates
the biodiversity teams to maintain and keep all equipment and specimen vouchers
in a standard procedure as necessary and to make sure that the equipment is
used for the best interest of FFI project performance.
9.
Travel
extensively across Indonesia and beyond as required to work with FFI-IP staff
and partner organizations.
10.
Undertake
other tasks assigned by Biodiversity and Wildlife Conservation Advisor and/or
FFI Program Director.
Key responsibilities:
1.
Coordinates
and mobilizes the FFI’s cameratrap teams to conduct the Sumatran tiger and key
wildlife monitoring survey, focusing on but not limited to Kampar Peninsula,
and to assure that the field works are implemented in a high standard following
the survey protocols in timely manner.
2.
Coordinates and
facilitates the development of Sumatran tiger and key wildlife survey protocols
and assures that the protocols are well implemented by the team through regular
participation in the field works as necessary.
3.
Assists in analysis
the Sumatran tiger and key wildlife biological datasets following the most
recent and robust analytical frameworks, and to provide technical reports of
the analyses in timely manner.
4.
Coordinates
and facilitates technical trainings for the field staff on tiger and key
wildlife monitoring methodologies and data analyses.
5.
Review
existing project documents to meet a particular writing and reporting standard
of FFI-IP projects.
6.
Coordinates
trainings, meetings and workshops facilitation with relevant stakeholders as
required and to formally represent FFI-IP as necessary in meetings, workshops
and conferences.
7.
To be
responsible for all finance and activity reporting under his/her responsibility
in Indonesian or English, written or verbal.
AD HOC
1. Anticipate and explore all prospective biodiversity conservation initiatives
to support and strengthen the FFI’s biodiversity conservation strategy as guided
by the FFI-IP Target Achievements and relevant documentations.
2. The implementation of program development by the National Biodiversity
Monitoring Coordinator as a consequence of the above ad hoc task is subject to
further assessment and agreement between both parties. A revision or an
addendum of this reference will be provided by FFI if necessary.
Requirements
1. A minimum of second level degree with 3 years working experience or first
level degree with 5 years working experience in relevant area.
2. Advanced in camera-trap capture-recapture framework and familiar with the
most recent wildlife survey techniques, including patch occupancy and distance
samplings.
3. Familiar with basic statistical/technical terms and analytical
interpretation.
4. Familiar with cameratrap devices, forest navigation, map reading, and
able to operate forest GPS and compass.
5. Familiar with basic ArcGIS, common statistical packages, and MS office
packages.
6. Possesses a strong leadership, management skills, and strong
interpersonal and communication skills.
7. Able to deal with tide schedule and unscheduled tasks, target oriented,
and has the capacity in project planning, implementation, and evaluation.
8. Willing to work at any circumstances both independently or in a group,
such as in remote areas with very limited facilities.
9. Excellent in writing skills and oral communciation both in Indonesian and
English.
10. Willing to travel extensively across FFI-IP’s conservation sites in
Indonesia and beyond.

Leaders for key wildlife monitoring in non-protected areas in Central Sumatra.
Responsibilities
The team leader will work with a small team
of four technicians to conduct intensive camaratrapping survey in peat swamp
habitats, with the following responsibilities:
1.
To lead the
implementation of FFI-IP’s cameratrapping survey in Kampar peninsula, including
pre-survey preparation, cameratrapping field work, and post-survey management.
2.
To translate
cameratrapping survey protocol into practice to assure that the survey is
carried out following the protocol in timely manner.
3.
To manage
survey dataset following the survey protocol and to assure that the dataset is
updated in timely manner.
4.
To manage
and maintain project equipment to assure that the equipment is used for the
best interest of FFI project performance.
5.
To be
responsible for all finance and activity reporting under his/her responsibility
as described in FFI-IP administration and financial guideline.
Requirements
This short-term position is dedicated for,
but not restricted to, enthusiastic young conservationists who are willing to
develop their professional career in applied conservation science especially in
large mammal’s conservation. A first level degree in relevant background,
senior university students, as well as members of adventure groups are strongly
encouraged to apply with the following minimum requirements:
1.
Committed to
work for the project for six full months with up to five consecutive months in
the field.
2.
Able to
demonstrate his/her experience in leading a small group of people in conducting
biodiversity survey field work.
3.
Experience
in conducting cameratrapping survey for large carnivores and terrestrial
mammals.
4.
Familiar
with Sumatran tiger and large ungulate signs, and common field guide book for
Southeast Asian mammals.
5.
Familiar
with cameratrap devices, forest navigation, map reading, and able to use forest
GPS and compass.
6.
Familiar
with MS office packages, especially MS Excel and MS Word.
7.
Possess a
strong leadership and able to work independently and in group.
8.
Able to deal
with tide schedule and unscheduled tasks, target oriented, and has the capacity
in project planning, implementation, and evaluation.
9.
Willing to
